The show: Radiohead: Beacon Theatre NY, NY. 6-5-03. MTV $2 bill. Original footage provided by 'Sauce', edited/chaptered/menued by 'Pedrohead' in DVD-LAB PRO. This is the full 2 HR show, not the limited broadcast that MTV2 aired last summer. PRO-SHOT. NTSC - appx. 4GB
The source: The source is a bit of a mystery as the show is still quite rare, no one's quite sure why it snuck itself out of MTV's vaults, and how someone got it out of there and on to a DVD. Given that mystery, no one is quite sure about the generation of VHS that was converted to DVD, maybe 1st, maybe 2nd, no one knows (see note on WIEAYB below).
Anyone that I talked to that had a copy we could get hold of acquired them from different places, but all seem to have the same source and quality. This hasn't really had time to spread and degrade yet as it was pretty much just discovered.
The details: As mentioned before, the dvd was edited in DVD-LAB PRO and has some sweet motion and audio menus, similar to the Reading Fest 94 DVD I torrented last week. The dvd covers the entire set, all encores, and even some amusing pre-show footage of staged intros and crowd reactions that MTV gathered for broadcast purposes (this of course is hidden on the dvd in easter egg form)
Note on WIEAYB: Apparently the master footage was spread between 2 VHS tapes. Near the end of this song, the original encoder finished tape 1 and put in tape 2. This leaves the DVD with about 30 seconds of an odd blue and grey screen. Because each tape was shortsightedly encoded as separate 'movies' with different bitrates to fit the whole thing on one DVD, trying to edit out the grey screen rendered both halves of the DVD out of sync. I didn't want to decode the dvd to MPEG2 to edit it and then run the risk of quality loss converting back to DVD. And trust me, I spent about 3 days and 5 software packages trying to get it to work. So what I did was place a dummy chapter break at the end of the nonsense so that when you see the song stop and the grey screen come up, just push your 'next chapter' button on your remote a couple times till you get to Track 3, Chapter 2. Or if you just let it continue running, it will eventually go to the conclusion of the song.
The quality: This is a great pro-shot and was captured to VHS before the DVD, so the video is not an A+++ like a digital transfer would be, but for sure an A. The video quality is very similar to that of the Euroknees 2003 DVD that was torrented out late last year. The audio however is Dolby Digital 2.0 and sounds amazing to my ears.
The stipulations None. Just enjoy the DVD and please hang around so that others can take advantage of this. If you find something wrong with it that I missed, please let me know kindly (as I mentioned before, I've spent an inordinate amount of time the last 4 days getting this DVD to the condition it is in now, so I'm a little testy) I've been provided with one cover and there may be a couple more coming, they will be attached to the torrent as they come in.
